Cancer Evaluation Beyond Imaging
March 20, 2018
Cardinal Santos Medical Center (CSMC) continues to innovate and educate in pursuit of providing expert and world-class medical care with the use of positron emission tomography scan and computed tomography scan (PET/CT) through the PET/CT Symposium: Cancer Evaluation Beyond Imaging, held on the evening of March 20, 2018 at CSMC's Events Center, Philippine Center for Advanced Surgery (PCAS) Building.
In partnership with GE Philippines, Inc. and CSMC's Radiology Department, an estimate of 169 members of the medical community arrived, eager to learn about the advancements and impact of PET/CT from GE Healthcare's consultant and keynote speaker, Dr. Gustav von Schulthess, renowned pioneer of PET/CT imaging and leading director of the first European PET/CT project. He is also a professor and the incumbent chairman of the Department of Medical Radiology at University Hospital Zurich, Switzerland. "This is one of the milestones again for Cardinal Santos having invited a foreign speaker for us to be oriented on the indications and advantages of PET/CT. Being at the forefront of technology, we are relaunching our PET/CT Center," shared by Dr. Maeda Gonda, MBAH, Business Development Head and Project Head of the symposium.
Dr. Gustav’s presentation entitled "The Impact of Molecular Imaging on Disease Evaluation" focused on the history of imaging technology, the importance of imaging technology and tracer molecules, and the clinical applications using FDG and other tracers. Dr. Gustav was then assisted by CSMC's very own Dr. Jonas Santiago and Dr. Kathleen Caligagan, consultants at the Nuclear Medicine Unit during the Open Forum. CSMC aims to make a change in the medical field not only by hosting lectures and providing medical assistance; it is also the home for doctors who wish to be trained and specialized in the field of radiology, including PET/CT. Dr. Cesar Co, Chairman of the CSMC Radiology Department proudly announced, "while radiology has been exciting in the past decade and it keeps on improving, one of the things that happened on radiology specialties is the formation of a hybrid specialty. So now we have radiology specialists subspecializing in several modalities, and one of them is PET/CT. I'm very proud to say that we have produced one of the real hybrid specialists which includes fellows in radiology subspecializing in both CT Scan and PET/CT scan."
